Delhi Agra Drive

Leave Delhi for Agra early morning. (6 am recommended, but can start at your convenience). 220 Kms. 4 Hours. 

 

You will spot variety of animals interdispersed amongst the human population - camels, oxen, cows, monkeys and maybe the "dancing bears" with their owners on the side of the road.

 

The Delhi - Agra highway is a good road. Local entrepreneurs have built restaurants with gift shops and relatively clean western-style rest rooms at strategic places.

See Taj Mahal, Agra Red Fort, Sikandara, Marble Inlay and carpert making workshops.

Agra is a city situated on the river Yamuna. Largely known for its Mughal rule (1526-1658), Agra finds mention in the great Indian epic Mahabharat where it is called Agrevana or 'the border of the forest'. 

 
History records Sultan Sikandar Lodi, ruler of Delhi sultantate as founder of the Agra in 1504. It is home to the famous monuments of Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Sikandara with Fatehpur Sikri about 45 Kms away. Other places of interest are I'timad-Ud-Daulah, Swami Bagh Samadhi, Chini ka Rauza, Mehtab Bagh.

The fort was commissioned by the great Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1565, and is another of Agra's World Heritage Sites. It is a redstone fort was converted into palace by Shah Jehan. Notable buildings inside fort are Pearl Mosque or Moti Masjid, the Diwan-e-aam and Diwan-e-Khas (halls of public and private audience), Jahangir's Palace, Khas Mahal, Shish Mahal (mirrored palace), and the Musamman Burj. The forbidding exteriors of this fort conceal an inner paradise. This is the fort from where Chhatrapati Shivaji escaped.

The Mughal Emperor Akbar built Fatehpur Sikri about 35 km from Agra, and moved his capital there. Later abandoned due to shortage of water, Akbar moved his headquarters to Agra Fort. It houses the shrine of the sufi saint Saleem Chisti.

Udaipur, founded in 1559, used to be the capital of the former kingdom of Mewar in Rajasthan. Legend is that the then ruling king Udai Singh II came upon a hermit who assured  the king that if he builds his capital at the spot, his capital will never be won over. Those were the times when Mughals were very powerful. History says that Udaipur has remain undefeated.

Called as Venice of the East, it has many Rajput palaces now converted to luxury hotels.

Situated on the east side of Lake Pichola, it is a collection of palaces built at different times from 1559. From the palace a panoramic view of the "Jag Niwas" (the Lake Palace Hotel) along with lovely view of Jag Mandir on one side and the city of Udaipur on the other.
Once you walk through the triple-arched gate - the Tripolia, built in 1725 your way shall now lead to a series of courtyards, overlapping parations, terraces, corridors and gardens.
 
Lake Palace
Built in 1743-1746, this palace is made of marble and is situated on Jag Niwas island in Lake Pichola. Built as a royal summer palace, it is now a famous luxury hotel. Octupussy (James Bond) was shot here.
 
Jag Mandir
Jag Mandir, which now has a restaurant, is another island in Lake Pichola which is known for its garden courtyard. Shah Jahan took refuge here while revolting against his father. 
Monsoon Palace
 
Monsoon Palace
Monsoon Palace also known as Sajjan Garh Palace is the summer resort of the royalty atop the hill overlooking all of the lakes. This palace had a way to collect rain water for consumption all year around. Even in the blistering mid-day sun of June, the draught is very cool and pleasant. Amazing!
 
Jagdish Temple
Built in 1651 by Maharana Jagat Singh, it is a very big temple in the middle of Udaipur. It showcases interesting architecture and is located in the main touristy areas.
 
Fateh Sagar Lake
Fateh Sagar Lake is situated in the north of Lake Picholas and was expanded after heavy rains that caused much damage.
 
Lake Pichola
Lake Pichola is the main lake. It has many bathing and washing ghats. There are two islands in there - Jag Niwas and the Jag Mandir. Originally built by Maharana Udai Singh II, its today's jewel is the Lake Palace Hotel. It is not very deep lake and can get to be dry if monsoon fails.

Gulab Bagh and Zoo
A rose garden near the palace on the east side of Lake Pichhola. It has a library which has a collection of ancient handwritten manuscripts and books. A famous arya samaj book, Satyarth Prakash has some of its part written here. Here in the garden, there is a zoo with tigers, leopards, Chinkara gazelle, birds, and many wild animals. Plus a mini train track which kids can enjoy as it runs through most part of the garden.
 
Doodh Talai
Take the rope way from Karni Mata temple to one of the gardens in Doodh Talai. This is a rock and fountain garden. At sunset you get panoramic views of Lake Pichhola and the old city.
 
Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal
A museum of folk arts which has an auditorium hosting puppet shows.

Here is a cluster of cenotaphs of the Maharanas of Mewar. 
 
Shilpgram
A crafts village near Udaipur and hosts an annual crafts fair which is one of the biggest in India.
 
Neemach Mata Temple
A temple on a green hill in the Dewali area of Udaipur. 
 
Udaipur Solar Observatory
Asia's only solar observatory, it is situated in the middle of the Lake Fatah Sagar.
 
Sukhadia Circle
A large roundabout in Udaipur, this is a popular recreational centre and meeting place for the locals.

Experience Train Option: Start  your Golden Triangle Trip by taking train from Delhi to Agra. Fast train (Shatabdi express, leaves 6.15 am reaching 8.10 am). AC chair car, breakfast served on train. Our car meets you in Agra and the triangle tour continues further by car. In this case, additional cost of Rs. 1,000/- per person to the prices mentioned below. Taj mahal closed on Friday. Approx. 5 am pickup from your hotel, drive to New Delhi railway station, on to the train seats.

Taj opens 10mts. before sunrise and in month of June few days it opens around 0520 AM and in Dec. it can be at 0710AM as in summer days are longer then winter.

 

In summer fog or hazy weather is not an issue. Fog during December and January.

 

Tickets to Taj Mahl can be purchased a day before but is not necessary most of the time.

Visit Mehtab Bagh on the other side of the river to see the Taj in evening at sunset.

 

 

Delhi Additional Costs

 

  • If Delhi airport pickup/drop is involved, then an additional Rs. 500 for small AC car & Rs. 750/- for large AC car.
  • Likewise, a pickup/drop from outside of South/Central Delhi i.e Gurgaon to Agra, Noida or Ghaziabad or Dwarka or East Delhi and similar areas is involved then an additional Rs. 500 for small car and Rs. 750/- for large car. 
  • Greater Noida or Rohini or Pitampura is an additional Rs. 750/- for small car and Rs. 1000/- for large car.
  • For Vasant Kunj it shall be additional Rs. 150/- for small car and Rs. 250/- for large car.

     

  • For Karol Bagh it shall be additional Rs. 200/- for small car and Rs. 350/- for large car.

     

  • Gurgaon Agra drive is about 4.5 hours. Distance from Gurgaon to Agra is about 250 to 275 Kms.
