|Itinerary: Delhi-Jaipur-Agra-Delhi (DraftTour Email us to customise this tour)|
Taj Mahal is closed on Friday.
A Golden triangle holiday in which both sunrise and sunset view of Taj Mahal is possible.
Planned and built on a nine blocks grid pattern by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, the architect from Bengal, employing Vaastu Shashtra principles created this elegant city. Jai Singh, the creator of city, could then easily allocate each block to a specific purpose.
The pink city of the Jaipur city is restricted to the walled city of Jaipur. It was conceived and created the backdrop of the decline of Mogul Empire. While Jaipur has many places of interest, the top two are the Amber Fort and City Palace.
City Palace is a giant complex and consumes two blocks of nine blocks of Jaipur, or nearly 22% of it. A mixture of Rajput and Mogul building style, it has many buildings, courtyards, gardens and a Museum. Only a limited portion is accessible to tourists.
The other attractions of Jaipur are the Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal and Jal Mahal. Jantar Mantar is one of the five astronomical observatories built by the keen astronomer Jai Singh.
Nestled and perched on hills, Amber Fort is a stunning Fort, first established in the 11th century. Subsequent period saw many additions to the complex, the last few exhibiting Mogul influence. A goat used to be sacrificed here daily, in front of the temple of goddess with silver doors. In 1980, this practice was discontinued. It is here, at the Amber Fort, that the elephant ride happens. It is a steep walk up to the Fort and elephants are available in the morning to carry you up to the Fort.
At sunrise, Taj Mahal blushes pink.
Sunrise experience of Taj Mahal is almost like religion. As the doors will open, you will catch glimpse of the famous white marble dome, staring majestically through the arch of the great gate. The space of time is reverential, as you soak in the dawn and watch the sunrise. During winter months, mist can be there which gives Taj Mahal a heavenly feeling. It is nirvana as marble manifestation built as a loving Memorial to his wife Taj Mahal, who was his real-time partner in all aspects of his life, including administration of the Empire.
But Agra has more. There is Agra Fort, Imad ud Daulah or the baby Taj, Mehtab Bagh and Sikandara.
Agra Fort was conceived and built by Akbar, both to defend and dazzle populace. It was a grand announcement in red stone by Akbar that he and his Empire are of some reckoning. It took eight years to build this fortress from the year 1565, when the decision was taken. As a favoured city of the Mogul dynasty, Agra was the recipient of considerable portion of the Empire's revenues. Considered by Akbar to be a strategic location to govern his Empire, Agra has many beautiful buildings as a legacy interspersed amongst its many narrow lanes.

A repository of Kuchwaha Rajputs, Amber Fort was established in the late 11th century. A collection of ruins, palaces, courtyards and temples are scattered around within the walls of the Fort. The Fort is perched on a hilltop and it is a steep climb from the road to the Fort gate. Ride an elephant for this section.
A temple with large silver doors dedicated to the goddess Durga is an important part of the Fort. Called Shila Devi temple, it is the patron goddess of the Royal family. Apparently the goddess appeared in the maharaja's dream, instructing him to recover her statue lying underneath the sea somewhere in Bangladesh. In 1604, the stone or Shila was recovered, taken to Amber Fort where it was purified after which the present idol appeared. A ritual of sacrificing a goat was practised here daily till the year 1980.
As the Amber Fort, has been a construction work in progress for about 8 to 900 years, the last phrase of building work displays Mogul influence.
Leave for Jaipur city.
En route are two destinations-Hawa Mahal and Jal Mahal. Jal Mahal is the water Palace. Hawa Mahal is the grand red stone facade building. Both Jal Mahal and Hawa Mahal can be photographed from the roadside. No access is permitted to the inside of these monuments. Hawa Mahal was used by the Royal ladies to watch the Street life secretly.
Now the visit to city Palace. Jaipur city was planned on a pattern of nine large blocks. Two of these blocks have been consumed by the city Palace. Tourists have limited access to the Palace and it includes the Museum. The restricted area is the residence of the current maharaja. The various buildings, gardens and courtyards exhibit amalgamation of Mogul and Rajasthani building styles. The Museum displays belong to the Royal family, such as carpets, a rare manuscripts, weapons and variety of costumes.
Next to visit is Jantar Mantar, the astronomical Observatory located just outside the city Palace. Unusual structures built in lime mortar and stone abound here. Jai Singh, the maharaja who built Jantar Mantar, used to spend hours gazing at sky from here.
Next, visit the bustling Jaipur bazaars to hunt for bargains.

Agra sightseeing with sunrise and sunset visits of Taj Mahal.
Between 5:30 to 6 AM, our driver and guide pick you up for the magical experience of Taj Mahal at sunrise. Taj Mahal is number 15 on CNN list of 27 places to visit.
As the doors to Taj Mahal will open, Taj Mahal will reveal herself, first shyly and then imposingly. With hardly any people, the creeping gentleness of the Dawn kissing Taj Mahal and making it blush pink is an ethereal moment that stays with you for the rest of your lifetime. After you have emerged from this out of the world experience, back to hotel for breakfast.
Visit Agra Fort after breakfast. Built by the mighty Akbar to defend and dazzle, the construction of Agra Fort was finished within eight years. Many a times, Akbar personally supervised the construction. Occasionally, he joined the workmen, even practising their craft with them. The Fort is built in a crecent shape following the river's curve. Agra Fort was the first building built by Akbar.
After Agra Fort, visit Sikandara. Sikandara is Akbar's tomb. Akbar himself had started the construction of this mausoleum, but at the time of his death, in the year 1605 it was still unfinished. The tomb was finished eight years after Akbar's death. Lots of monkeys in the garden of this monument.
Visit Itmad-ud-Daula's tomb. The baby Taj, as it is popularly called, was built by Nur Jahan as a memorial to her father. Nur Jahan, the Empress was the aunt of Mumtaz Mahal and administered the Empire as a proxy for the Emperor Jehangir. You can be dazzled by its pristine whiteness and luxurious decoration.
Late afternoon, closer to sunset time, we move on to Mehtab Bagh, the garden opposite to Taj Mahal, but across the river. As the sun sets slowly, the morning's sunrise Taj Mahal view goose pimples can revisit.
