In this quick and efficient of Agra and Jaipur from Delhi, you experience few of the important activities of India as a tourist.
First of the block is your experience of New Delhi railway station and the subsequent train journey to Agra. Indian Railways is a huge mass mover and the legacy left by the British has been considerably improved in many areas, though attention to aesthetics has been minimal. For the curious minded, a little history here.
The New Delhi railway station has been upgraded and modernised. It is an experience to board a train at the New Delhi railway station. Huge mass of people, few of them even sleeping on the floor, while they wait for their delayed train.
BBC detailed documentary of Indian Railways history with some old footage.
Your ride to Agra is in an air-conditioned chair car of the fastest train in India. Breakfast is served on the train, and it leaves Delhi at 6:15 AM sharp. After a mere two hours you are at Agra.
Agra is the city of Taj Mahal, but Agra Fort is no less as well. However, there are many forts in India but Taj Mahal is unique.
Agra was the city much pampered by the Mogul dynasty. Babur, the founder of Mogul dynasty in India traced his lineage back to Timur and Changez Khan, the two mighty conquerors of Asia.
Babur, though preferred to be known as the descendant of Timur, the cultured Turkish line.
Agra was won over by Babur after he defeated Ibrahim Lodhi at Panipat mouth and got both Delhi and Agra as the prize. In Agra, when the Mughals ruled, there was nothing in the world that was not available here.
In Agra, you shall visit the Taj Mahal, the Agra Fort, Mehtab Bagh and perhaps, and if time permitting, Itmad ud Daulah.
Fatehpur Sikri, or city of victory was a little village of no consequence prior to the construction of this magnificent red stone citadel except for the fact that Sufi mystic saint Salim Chishty lived here. Constructed in the late 16th century, the mighty Emperor Akbar delirious with joy on becoming a father for the first time as portended by Salim Chishty, built this city as a tribute to him. Within the walls of this fort, the shrine of Salim Chishty exists and daily homage is paid to him by the devotees. Lack of water made Akbar abandon this town within a few years.
Jaipur, also known as the pink city, was established in 1727 using the principles of Vaastu Shashtra (Indian feng shui) when the earlier capital of the region, Amber Fort (established 1037), could not grow further. Within eight years the city of Jaipur was built. The pink colour is restricted to its old quarters and its bazaars amongst the most vibrant in the Asia.
Jaipur is where the elephant Festival happens in the month of March, a day before Holi, the festival of colours.
Amber Fort, while being a distinctive Rajput architecture style, did succumb partly to the Mogul influence in the later years. A cobbled street takes you up to the Amber Fort, which is fortified by natural hills, many gates and high ramparts.
